„we’re a brand new old-fashioned pop band from Sunderland“ (Frankie Francis)
Tja, so ist das eben manchmal, wenn man nur nach einem Song geht. Man mag ein Lied nicht und schließt damit auf die restlichen Songs einer Band. Das mag in einigen Fällen, meistens auch in vielen, richtig sein, aber im Falle von Frankie & The Heartstrings war es dann eben falsch.
Die Tage bin ich auf das Video zu deren neuen Single „Ungreatful“ gestoßen, und was soll ich sagen, mir gefiels nicht. Ich hatte schon ein wenig über die Band gelesen und dachte doch, dass die in mein Beuteschema passen, aber irgendwie hat’s mit dem Song nicht wirklich „klick“ gemacht.
Am Wochenende habe ich jetzt aber gemerkt, dass ich zu Jahresbeginn einen Song schon öfter von denen gehört hatte. Das Stück „Possibilities“ war auf dem NME Radar Mixtape 2010 vertreten, und ist mir schon da positiv aufgefallen. Jedoch gabs da ein paar andere Bands, die mir zu dem Zeitpunkt mehr in Erinnerung blieben (u.a. The Drums, Egyptian HipHop, Theophilus London). Das war aber ein Grund um der Band nochmals Gehör zu schenken, und siehe da, jetzt haben sie mich. Vor allem das überragende Stück „Fragile“ hat es mir angetan. Auch wenn ich etwas spät dran sein mag und der Hype schon am Rollen ist, aber das wird noch in den letzten paar Monaten eine meiner 2010er Lieblingshymnen. Der Wechsel zwischen ruhigem Vers und Sing-a-long- Fäuste-in-die-Höhe-Chorus geht einem so ins Blut, als würde man schon seit Jahren zu dem Song die Tanzflächen stürmen. Irgendwo zwischen Spät-50er und frühen 60er-Jahren würde man die Band anhand des Looks des Sängers und des Bandnamens einordnen. Ganz so falsch ist das nicht, aber natürlich schauen auch die bekannten 80er Jahre Helden vorbei. Mit dem jungen Edwyn Collins werden sie verglichen, aber ich hör auch die Musik der Smiths ein wenig raus. „Janglepop with rousing choruses“ nennt es der Guardian und liegt damit genau richtig um diesen modernen aber zugleich auch völlig retro klingenden Sound zu beschreiben.
Bis jetzt sind 2 Singles und eine EP draußen, und die Band arbeitet am ersten Album. Wenn „Ungreatful“ ein Ausrutscher war (ich kanns einfach nicht sagen was mir dran nicht gefällt) und die Band die Qualität hält, dann freu ich mich jetzt schon auf ein überragendes Album.

Well, sometimes it’s just like that when you judge a band only from one song. You don’t like the song and you think all of the band’s songs are not worth your time. In some cases, or in a lot of cases, that may be true, but with the songs of Frankie & The Heartstrings it is so damn wrong.
I discovered the video of their new Single „Ungreatful“ the other day, and well, what can I say: I didn’t like it. I had heard of the band earlier and thought that they might be down my alley, but somehow it just didn’t „klick“. That weekend I noticed that I had listend to one of their songs earlier this year a few times as they were part of the NME Radar Mixtape 2010, but some other bands got my attention more than Frankie and his boys ( for example The Drums, Egyptian HipHop, Theophilus London). It was the song „Possibilities“ which got me into them again and after listening to „Fragile“ they finally got me. This song is so awesome, it has simply taken a shine to me. I may be a bit late with the song in the blog world, but I don’t care and I’m sure it’ll be one of my top songs of 2010 in the end. The change between the calm verse and the sing-a-long-raise-your-arms-chorus goes right into your blood as if you were storming the indie-dancefloor to this song since years. Somewhere between the late 50’s and the early 60’s, that’s where you’d put the band according to the look of the singer and the band name. That’s it nearly, but also the usual British indy pop heroes of the 80’s peek around the corner. They get compared to the young Edwyn Collins, but I also have the young Smiths in mind, at least the music, not the singer’s voice. The Guardian called it „Janglepop with rousing choruses“ and I think that this is quite right to describe their modern and yet totally retro sounding style.
Up to now they’ve released two singles and one EP and currently they’re working on their debut album. In case „Ungreatful“ is the only one-off (I’m sorry, I don’t know what it is that makes me dislike the song) and the band keeps up that quality, then I’m already looking forward to a great album.
